Flocks of gulls and shorebirds gather at the east end of the causeway.

North Jetty

Turn south from the causeway. The road runs directly into a Isla Blanca County Park entrance where there is a fee of about $4. To get to the south jetty see the Boca Chica Area. The jetties are usually referred to in relation to the shipping channel and not the island. The North Jetty is north of the shipping channel but south of the island. There is also a jetty at the north end of the island at the Mansfield Cut described below.

In winter: Northern Gannets, Rarely Jaegers
Rarities: White-winged Scoter, Surf Scoter, Black-legged Kittiwake, Bonaparte's Gull, Great Black-backed Gull.

Convention Center

A boardwalk through 50 acres of dune meadows, salt marsh and intertidal flats. Near the convention center buildings the gardens attract rare migrants. Directions: This WBC location is located at 7355 Padre Blvd. This is on the north side of town and the Laguna Madre (west) side of the island.

At W. Sheepshead St. -- From the main road turn west near the Pizza Hut. You will see the lots on both sides of the road.

Landfill

The entrance of the landfill is on Ayers (HWY 386). Exit Greenwood Dr. off of S. Padre Island Drive and go west to Saratoga. Turn left on Saratoga and go to HWY. 386. Turn right and go about ½ mile. The landfill entrance is in on your right. Please check in at the landfill headquarters and follow any instructions given by employees. The landfill is closed on Sundays.

Mansfield Cut

The Mansfield Cut jetty is 25 miles of very scenic driving on the sand from beach access #6. A high clearance vehicle is recommended and 4wd can be helpful. Also called the East Cut. In the summer season there is a $3 beach cleanup fee. Go north from the causeway through town and continue to beach access #6. Sometimes beach access #5 is easier to use.
