Regional Information

Range, Abundance, and Seasonal Variations

One of the best places to se the Red-crowned Parrots is in Weslaco. About 45 minutes before sunset more than 100 parrots stage on the power lines in the Weslaco before dropping down into the Valley Nature Center for the night. Also try 4th Street, just south of the Nature Center. They also have been seen on 10th streen in McAllen and have nested there in the past.

Another place is in McAllen near the corner of Dallas and Mockingbird.

They are also readily found in Brownsville.

Size

Field Marks

Bright green overall with a red crown on the head and a red wing patch. The upper and side of the neck is pale bluish.

Similar species

Green Parakeets have a slightly shriller and higher pitched call. They also have a long slender tail while the parrots hav a stubbier straight edged tail.

Sounds

Cry is a loud and raucous two-note cleeoo, cleeoo, followed by ahk-akh-ahk.

Feeding & Behavior

Fruit and nut trees; pecans, acorns, figs, and hackberries, etc.

Habitat & Nesting

Semi-deciduous forest and semi-open country with scattered trees.
