Field Marks
Long, thin, slightly decurved bill, bold white supercilium, gray-brown upperparts (browner in eastern United States birds), grayish-white underparts, wings and tail barred with black. Long tail has white corners and is frequently held upright, dark legs. Sexes similar.
Similar species
While similar in appearance to the Carolina Wren, it has a long tail that is tipped in white. Carolina Wren is rustier above and buffier below. Can be distinguished from House and Rock Wrens by its bold white supercilium. Marsh Wren has a streaked back.
Sounds
The song is loud and melodious, much like the song of other wrens.
Feeding & Behavior
Habitat & Nesting
Lives in thickets, brush piles and hedgerows, open woodlands and scrubby areas, often near streams. It usually lays 5-7 eggs that are white with brown spots.
Range
From southern British Columbia, Nebraska, southern Ontario, and southwestern Pennsylvania south to Mexico, Arkansas and the northern Gulf States.
